Employee Engagement
Be CLEAR!

Employee engagement is part of most leaders' vocabulary these days. Winning the genuine engagement of employees not only helps productivity now, it's a vital part of retaining talented people and giving better customer satisfaction. But what does employee engagement mean? Here is a quick checklist to help busy leaders think about how effective their employee engagment is:

C  larity

  • understand what the objective of your communication is - what message do you want to get over and what kind reaction or response are you trying to create. If you're not clear, no-one else will be...

L   isten

  • yes, everyone knows you should be a good listener, but what does this mean in practice? It means putting aside all the blocks and filters which distort what we hear. It means being alert to all the verbal and non-verbal signals we receive. Listen superficially and you'll get superficial conclusions...and wrong results.

E   ngage

  • seems obvious, but engagement has to be two-way. That means not only listening, but making sure that the dialogue with employees is sustained and based on common values. It means speaking a common language and communicating in a regular, timely way and in an appropriate setting.

A   rguments

  • an important part of truly engaging with employees in any communication is having compelling arguments and evidence. And, since people are joyously different, they need to be convinced in different ways. Graphs and Powerpoint shows don't do it for everyone. So good leaders should be able to argue their case in a range of styles

R   esponse

  • employee engagement is not just about set-piece communication, It should be a flow, a dynamic, with effective responses to information and feelings. Is this the case with your employee engagement activities?
